AWS Cost Objects and CUR Reports in Maestro

Costs visibility and optimization is one of Maestro functionality keystones.

We keep on not only developing new features aimed to enhance your experience in this area, but also regularly improve integrations with cloud providers' native tools,

Recently, a whole set of AWS networking optimization reports appeared, as well as the possibility to get reports by Cost Objects.

Cost and Usage Optimization Report

Networking is one of the significant areas in any infrastructure – from the architecture, performance, and costs point of view.

If the networking usage is not monitored and optimized properly, large part of high expenses in the tenants can be bound to idle or low utilized network resources that are billed on an hourly basis. AWS workspaces that are used not inline with the plan can also affect the resulting budget.

To help Maestro users optimize their infrastructure in AWS, Maestro introduces the new set of Cost and Usage optimization reports. These reports are based on smart queries to Athena and provide the information about the following resources:

  •         Idle ELBs : The Elastic Load Balancers in your tenant which didn’t receive any traffic last month and ran for more than 336 hours (14 days). Resources displayed in the table could be considered for deletion.

  •         Underutilized ELBs: The top 10 Elastic Load Balancers in your tenant which received less than 0.001 GB last month and ran for more than 336 hours (14 days). Maestro recommends optimizing the usage of the listed resources and consider merging traffic of several load balancers into one.

  •         Idle VPC Endpoints: The top 10 VPC endpoints in your tenant which didn’t receive any traffic last month and ran for more than 336 hours (14 days). Maestro recommends considering deletion of resources displayed in the table.

  •         Underutilized VPNs: The top 10 VPNs in your tenant which didn’t received less than 0.001 GB last month and ran for more than 336 hours (14 days). Maestro recommends optimizing the usage of the listed resources and consider merging traffic of several VPNs into one.

  •         Underutilized NAT Gateways: The top 10 NAT Gateways in your tenant which received less than 0.001 GB last month and ran for more than 336 hours (14 days). Maestro recommends optimizing the usage of the listed resources and consider merging traffic of several NAT gateways into one.

  •         Idle NAT Gateways: The top 10 NAT gateways in your tenant which didn’t receive any traffic last month and ran for more than 336 hours (14 days). Maestro recommends considering deletion of resources displayed in the table.

  •         Highly utilized AutoStop WorkSpaces:  The top 10 AWS AutoStop WorkSpaces with the highest costs. AutoStop WorkSpaces are cost effective when used for several hours per day. If AutoStop WorkSpaces in your tenant run for more than 80 hours per month, Maestro recommends switching these WorkSpaces to AlwaysOn mode.

There are three ways you can review the Cost and Usage optimization reports for network items:

·        In the Monthly Expenses report

In case Maestro detects the respective optimization items, it adds the report as an additional section of the Monthly Expenses report:

·        On the Reporting tab

To review the reports by network items on the Reporting page, run the Settings wizard, Select Cost and usage optimization report type, and then – the necessary Product name.

·        On the Analytics dashboard

In case any of the cost and usage optimization items for AWS networking are detected, they are also displayed on the Analytics dashboard for quick access and review.

Clicking the widget directs you to the Reporting tab with the properly configured filters which allows you to view the information in detail.

Having the costs and usage optimization information for network resources, Maestro users can take the necessary actions to optimize the infrastructure and avoid additional expenses.

Cost Objects Report

Using the Analytics dashboard, Maestro users can receive a lot of useful information processed by the system and prepared based on the most frequently used or expensive resources. However, we also introduced the ability to generate reports for other usage and resource types, which are not shown on the main dashboard, as the data is generated by the Cloud provider dynamically.

To create such reports, you should use the Settings wizard on the Reporting tab and select the Cost object details report from the Report type dropdown specifying the necessary product name, usage type, and resource type.

Please note that you cannot select three “All” options for product name, usage type, and resource type, and some options are not compatible. Maestro will notify you if some of this happens.

Thus, Maestro provides convenient access to native AWS CURs and to give deep understanding of the costs origins at the same entry point as infrastructure managements and review is performed.
